Project to be funded:

New equipment to fully equip our new rescue truck, which was made possible to our department through this grant process in 2002.  We would also like to purchase enough SCBA’s for each member of our department.

Use of grant monies:

The grant monies will be used in the following manner:  $45,420 for the purchase of fire fighting equipment and $52,200 will go towards personal protective equipment.

How this grant will benefit Wingo Fire Department, Graves, Hickman, and Fulton Counties:

This equipment will be used primarily on our new rescue truck. Currently Mayfield Fire Department has the only rescue truck in Graves County with this type of equipment. They serve a 600 square mile area, with the addition of this equipment on our new truck we will be able to assume approximately 250 square miles of the county.  Currently the federal and state governments are putting together regional HazMat teams, for which this vehicle and equipment would be a valuable asset. There are six (6) volunteer departments in our immediate area which we provide and receive mutual aide. With the addition of this equipment all departments in our area would benefit. We would no longer depend on Mayfield Fire Department, for use of their rescue truck on routine calls. Also, we would have a faster response time for life threatening situations, because our truck would roll initially to the incident, not having to wait for the Mayfield response vehicle. As you can see our department along with the surrounding area will benefit greatly.

Why this grant is needed for the purchase of fire fighting and personal protective equipment:

Wingo Fire Department operates solely on donations, fund raisers, and state grant money. Our annual contributions average $14,000 in donations, $7,000 through fund raisers, $8,250 in state grants and $2,000 from the fiscal courts budget surplus. With an annual income of $31,250 to operate with, we cannot purchase the needed equipment.

Budget Items:
Utilities $1825.00
Repairs $2450.00
Maintance $3200.00
Equipment $2500.00
PPE $2250.00
EMS Equip. $ 500.00
Office Sup. $ 800.00
Training $2500.00
Truck Payment $8250.00
Dispatch Fee $3000.00

Year Total $27275.00
Balance $3975.00

Considering a major breakdown of any of our equipment, we will depleat our balance, plus borrow money to continue operation. Equipment failures such as a 1000 gpm pump, $15,000 to $20,000 to replace, fire engine motor, $10,000 to replace, ect. If we do encounter one of these problems, we will have to cut back our budget to make the loan payment.

Additional Information:

The Wingo Fire Department serves a 74.59 square mile area with a population of approximately 4,500 people, 1,450 residents. During farming operations the population increases by 200 to 300 people due to migrant workers. We are not a tax base district, our primary income is from donations from our residents. The amount we collect in donations versus the population equal about $3.11 per person or $9.65 per household.

Our department is located 1/2 mile from the
Purchase Parkway, with the only enterance and exit between Mayfield and Fulton.
